The project ISEPA aims to address the issue of environmental and economic sustainability of industrial aquaponics. Research has drawn inspiration from the unexpressed potential of large-scale aquaponics. In theory, it is a system that would allow large quantities of vegetables and aquatic animals to be produced simultaneously, while optimizing the use of water. In practice, aquaponics is hampered by the technological limits of current plants, and the low consumer acceptance of its food products.
For this reason, the project ISEPA aims to design large-scale plants that will be more productive, efficient and environmentally sustainable than the few large systems currently in operation, by incorporating modern IoT architectures that will allow to monitor and manage the single operating blocks.
At the same time, the project ISEPA intends to develop food products (e.g. fish fillets) and highly innovative biotech by-products (e.g. collagen), exploiting the biological and biotechnological research results.
To this end, the project ISEPA will build the prototype of a fully automated aquaponics plant being at the same time a technological demo and a test platform for all further process and product innovations
